Coming into effect in 2021. Natasha's Law will be implemented across the UK. The new law will require food businesses to include full ingredients labelling on pre-packaged foods. The advantages of this law is that when introduced it aims to protect allergy sufferers and give them confidence in the food they buy.

Natashas Law - Implications

The main area that will need addressing is for any business that sells prepackaged food or packages food on the premises. This will not only effect the larger manufactures but the smaller independent outlets as well.

  • Coffee shops - Pastries, Sandwiches, snacks
  • Butchers - Sausages, Pies, Flans, Sandwiches, rolls
  • Bakeries - Pastries, Bread, Sandwiches
  • Sandwich shops, Sandwiches, Toasties anything pre-packed

The list is endless and some items you may not know that fall into this category could be as simple as cakes sold in your Coffee shop or Sausages & Pies you have pre-packed. Adhering to the law will also not be as strait forward as just printing a new label.

Full ingredients need to be listed and any listed Allergens must be in BOLD PRINT or another colour. This poses a real challenge for most label systems on scales and tills as they are not geared toward this type of format. Additionally their maybe more information required on the label and it may not all fit due to the new size guidelines from the government.
